NV: Nevada
Summary: Nevada has strong felony penalties. After AB 381 ("Reba's Law," 2025), totally disabling or killing a police animal is a Category B felony (1 to 6 years, up to $10,000, plus restitution for vet care and replacement). There's no K9-specific EMS law, and nothing on vests, retirement or retired care.
Body armor
- None found.
Medical & insurance
- No K9-specific EMS treatment or transport statute was found. NRS 638.015 exempts unpaid emergency aid to an animal, and emergency paramedical services during transport to a vet, from the veterinary licensing chapter. It's general, not K9-specific.
- Restitution: under NRS 574.105(2)(b)(2), the court may order restitution to the owning agency for vet services and replacement.
Retirement & service limits
- None found.
Post retirement care
- None found.
Penalties for harming police animals
- NRS 574.105, as amended by AB 381 (83rd Sess., 2025), "Reba's Law," sponsor Assemblymember Melissa Hardy (R-Henderson).
- Taunting, tormenting, beating, striking or drugging a police animal, or interfering with it or its handler: Category D felony.
- Torturing, mutilating, injuring, poisoning, disabling or killing one: Category D felony plus a fine up to $10,000. If the animal is totally disabled or killed, it's a Category B felony: 1 to 6 years in state prison, up to $10,000, plus restitution.
- The official NRS page shows Category B. Older Justia versions (2022 and 2024) show Category C, which was the law before 2025. Signed June 2025.
Pending or failed bills
- No pending bills found. Nevada meets in odd years, so the next regular session is 2027.
